Is the US taking equity in miners to reduce dependence on China?
Core argument: The Trump administration announced a $35.6mn investment for a 10% stake in Canadian miner Trilogy Metals, with the agreement enabling the federal government to acquire a further 7.5%, according to the White House.
The Trump administration has said it will take a 10% stake in a Canadian mining company and allow a controversial infrastructure project in Alaska as it aims to break US dependency on China for critical resources. The $35.6mn investment in Trilogy Metals was announced on Monday as the White House approved the Ambler Road project, which the Biden administration had blocked based on its environmental impact. The road would open remote areas to mining companies including Trilogy. The agreement also enabled the federal government to acquire a further 7.5% of Trilogy, said the White House in a statement.
