Ed Comment:Ok to add. not much there; but interesting nevertheless. Dividing by the world population is an odd measures since such a big part of the world is not engaged in producing innovation and probably never will be. So world population hasn’t driven the pace of innovation as would be the case if x% of the world population had been engaged in producing it. I guess the number of researchers is growing faster than GDP and GDP is growing faster than world population so researchers as a share of world population is growing, which seems to negate my conclusion (ie x is rising). But as I said previously, I fear that smarts are increasingly used for esoterica that barely contributes to productivity growth, that most of the innovation comes from mining the tech frontier, and fewer people are engaged in that mining relative to the world population. Moreover, I think the developing world is merely developing because it lacks the talent to successfully implement proven ideas. So even proven ideas aren’t getting implements. A better measure is probably just some measure of the production ideas independent of the world population. Presumably that’s slowing down. Is it?
