Trump & Cruz Have Big Problems with Independent Voters

In today’s Wall Street Journal, Stanford University Professor David Brady says Trump and Cruz have big problems with independent voters. In a recent YouGov polling of 5,000 independents, 51% said they “would never vote for” Donald Trump. 41% said they would never vote for Ted Cruz. 48% of moderates said they would vote for Hillary Clinton—16 points more than Trump and 22 points more than Cruz.

According to Brady, “in 2012 Mitt Romney outpolled Barack Obama 50% to 45%” with independents but still lost. Brady notes that “because there are 5% more Democrats than Republican, the GOP needs a solid majority of independents to win a national election.

Brady concludes, “How could anyone, under those circumstances, expect either of these two to win a general election?”
